Grandfather Charged In Deadly Shooting Of Grandson

CREATED May 9, 2014

WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. - Authorities in Wilson County arrested a 77-year-old grandfather in the fatal shooting of his grandson during an apparent altercation at their home Wednesday night.

James Frances Hoover was charged with criminal homicide and attempted criminal homicide after his release from Vanderbilt University Medical Center Thursday.

Authorities said Hoover shot and killed his grandson, 31-year-old James Earl Chase Hoover, at a home on Chicken Road near Tater Peeler Road around 8 p.m. Wednesday. The younger Hoover's girlfriend, 31-year-old Crystal Colver, was also shot in the leg, and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

The elder Hoover was also taken to Vanderbilt to be treated for cuts and lacerations from the apparent altercation that took place prior to the shooting.

Sheriff Bryan said all three lived at the home.

A gun has been recovered from the home, and processed as evidence, according to the sheriff. He said the motive appeared to be drug-related.
