Officials In West Tennessee Find Missing Airplane, Pilot

CREATED May 8, 2014

COVINGTON, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities in West Tennessee said a pilot was injured when a single-engine plane crashed near Covington Municipal Airport.

Tipton County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty said Wednesday the Piper PA28 was found in a heavily wooded area in neighboring Lauderdale County, near the Hatchie River. Daugherty said emergency crews removed the pilot, who suffered serious injuries, from the woods.

The pilot, identified as 62-year-old Kent Wingate of Dayton, Ohio, was flown to a Memphis hospital. Federal officials say the plane departed from Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Ohio.

Daugherty said Wingate told air controllers he planned to land around 11 a.m. at the airport 45 miles northeast of Memphis. The plane never landed, and authorities began a search.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
