Cleanup Continues At Site Of Christiana Fire

CHRISTIANA, Tenn. Cleanup continued Friday on a property in Christiana, nearly 24 hours after a large fire there sent smoke billowing into the air, seen for miles around the area.

The blaze started on a property off of Shelbyville Pike in Christiana, that was used as a storage yard for hundreds of wooden pallets.

It was a fire that took fire crews several hours to battle last night.  No one was injured, but the blaze was so big, there were still some flames popping up in hot spots Friday.

Fire crews said the blaze likely started when a spark from a nearby burn pile, used to destroy unusable wooden pallets on the property, got picked up from a gust of wind, and eventually ignited a nearby barn.

That barn was destroyed, along with a bulldozer, a forklift, and more than $1,000 in tools.

“I feel like I lost my best friend when I lost that dozer,” said Billy Hillis, Uncle of the man who operates the family-run business.  “But all that can be replaced, I'm just glad there wasn't anybody out there working underneath anything when all of that happened.”

Billy’s nephew, Christopher Hillis told NewsChannel 5 he was already back on the job Friday, delivering wooden pallets in Huntsville, Alabama.
