Protecting Plants From Expected Freezing Temps

NASHVILLE, Teen. – Freezing temperatures have been forecast for much of Middle Tennessee, which is a good reason for you to prepare to protect your outside plants.

Tuesday night, the temperature is expected to fall below freezing and it's advised that if you have plants outside, make sure you put something over them.

The cover should allow your plants to breathe, so this can easily be an older sheet from your home, shielding your plants from frost.

"You might consider over the top of the sheet putting a thin layer of plastic, but only do that with the sheet on first. If the plastic is put on to tender growth or open flowers, it will burn directly through the plastic," said David Bates, owner of Bates Nursery and Garden Center.

It is often suggested to never plant anything before April 15.
