JACKSON, Tenn. – A 25-year-old Madison County woman was killed in an early morning car fire.

Officials with the Jackson Police Department said Taliesha Souter, of Jackson, was killed Saturday morning when a fire broke out inside her vehicle.

Police said Souter and her 27-year-old boyfriend were riding along Whitehall Street when her cigarette ignited with an open can of gasoline inside the car. The car left the roadway and came to rest near a wood line.

While her boyfriend was apparently able to escape the blaze, Souter did not make it out of the car.

Authorities arrived on the scene around 3:15 a.m. and found him standing near the burning car. Souter was declared deceased at the scene.

He was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for burns and later released.

An autopsy will be performed on Souter to determine the exact cause of death.
