Officer Injured In Police Chase Released From Hospital
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The officer who was injured in an early morning crash Sunday while pursuing a suspect has been released from the hospital.
Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said 25-year-old Nicholas Berens was released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center Thursday and is now recovering at home.
Berens was critically injured while he and another policeman were pursuing a suspect down Bell Road in South Nashville.
According to police, Berens was traveling down the road when a motorist in front of him suddenly stopped and turned left. He reportedly swerved his vehicle to avoid hitting the car and slammed into a tree on the side of the road.
Berens was pinned inside the vehicle for nearly 30 minutes while firefighters worked to free him from the cruiser.
Police said he suffered several fractures, contusions and cuts as a result of the crash.
