Man Arrested For 1993 Murder Of Mother-In-Law
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man has been arrested for the death of his estranged mother-in-law 21 years after she was found beaten to death.
Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said John Steven Hernandez has been indicted in the death of Annis Szekely.
Szekely, who was 70-years-old at the time of the murder, was found dead by her grandson on the evening of March 7, 1993. Police said she had suffered significant head trauma and was found tied to her hospital bed.
Hernandez had apparently lived with the victim for a time, along with his wife and her two sons, but police said he and his wife had separated prior to the murder.
Investigators said DNA testing provided enough evidence to indict Hernandez in July of 2013 but at the time, he was being held in San Antonio on charges of human trafficking.
Hernandez has since been extradited back to Nashville. He will be arraigned in Criminal Court in the near future.
