CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – As the Ft. Hood, Texas community continues to grieve following the shooting there last week, a retired soldier in Clarksville is remembering one of the victims who used to work with him.
Mark Underwood was in the same squad as Sergeant Timothy Owens at Ft. Hood back in 2011.
Both Underwood and Owens operated trucks at Ft. Hood -- working side by side in the same unit.
Owens was one of the three soldiers killed in the shooting at Fort Hood last week.
Underwood said Owens embraced military standards, and he wanted to be a drill sergeant. He said Owens would often ask him, a former drill sergeant himself, for advice.
Underwood said even though it had been years since he had seen Owens, it didn't make hearing the news of his death any easier.
"When you've worked together and you've deployed together, you kind of create more of a bond, it affects you a lot more because you don't expect things like that," Underwood said.
Underwood said he was not at Fort hood in 2009 when another mass shooting took place.
