MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. – A Maury County Corrections officer has been charged with four counts of rape.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested Ray Pitt Jr. Monday night. The TBI said they were requested to investigate the 36-year-old by District Attorney General Mike Bottoms on Sunday. The Sheriff's Department received the initial tip that lead to a much bigger investigation.
"The more we got into it, the bigger it got," Capt. Jimmy Tennyson with the Maury County Sheriff's Department said.
The details about what led to the rape charges were not immediately released, but NewsChannel 5 has learned that it involves two minors and has nothing to do with his conduct on the job.
Still Capt. Tennyson says the allegations alone blemish the department. He assures the public that Pitt won't get special treatment.
"It's going to be a whole lot tougher on (him), the individual that's doing these activities, than it would be for the (public)," Capt. Tennyson said. "Because you know better. You know what you're getting into."
For eight years Pitt worked directly with inmates at the Maury County jail. Before that he worked for the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
The TBI said their investigation is ongoing, with the assistance of the Tennessee Department of Children's Services and the Maury County Sheriff's Department.
A court date was set for March 26.
