ROBERTSON COUNTY, Tenn. – Police have identified the two men who were killed and another who was injured after their car crashed into a semi-truck overnight in Portland.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said 21-year-old Conner Edwards and 22-year-old Cody Yell were killed in the crash at the intersection of Lake Springs Road and Highway 31 West just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Another passenger, 21-year-old Alexander Reed, was hurt.
Investigators said Edwards was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Sedan along Lake Springs Road when he ran into the rear of a semi-truck stopped at a stop sign. The THP said the car was traveling at a speed of approximately 80 miles per hour.
Edwards and Yell died at the scene, and investigators said they were not wearing their seatbelts. Reed, who was wearing a seatbelt, was injured. It was unclear which hospital he was taken to.
All three occupants of the car had been drinking, according to the THP.
The driver of the semi-truck was not hurt.
A THP report said that investigators did not believe seatbelts would have made a difference. The posted speed along Lake Springs Road is 30 mph.
