Skeletal Remains Identified As Missing Murfreesboro Man

CREATED Feb 14, 2014

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Remains found earlier this month have been identified as a Rutherford County man missing since September.

Investigators said they have identified remains found on February 2 on Big Springs Road as 58-year-old Dale Gaines. A cause of death was not immediately released but foul play is not suspected

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said Gaines was reported missing September 15, 2013, by family members. He was last seen when his brother dropped him off at a home on East Castle Street in Murfreesboro. He rode off on a bicycle and had not been seen since.

His brother, Guster, reported him missing after he could not reach him on his cell phone and couldn't find him.

Gaines was battling cancer at the time and undergoing chemo and radiation. His family was left with many questions.

During a January press conference, Gaines' brothers Jonah and Guster asked for citizens to give information about their brother's location.

"I don't know if the chemo or radiation affected him any. September the 17th is the last day I seen[sic] him," said Guster Gaines in late January.

Dale Gaines played basketball and ran track for Riverdale High School in the mid-1970s.

It is still not clear why Gaines ended up in the ravine. Detectives are still asking for information in the case.
