Winter Weather Paralyzes Parts Of East Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Unexpected levels of snowfall, ice and treacherous road conditions continue to paralyze parts of East Tennessee.
Schools, businesses and government offices remained closed in east Tennessee on Wednesday as temperatures remained well below freezing.
The Knoxville area received about three inches of snow by Tuesday night -- a surprise to many after the forecast called for flurries.
The snowfall caught many off guard, stranded kids on school busses, snarled traffic and led to multiple accidents on icy roads.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported that the Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency activated its Emergency Operations Center to respond to all the accidents.
Some county governments remained closed in upper east Tennessee Wednesday, where some areas reported as much as five inches of snow.
