Woman Killed In Head-On Crash In Maury County
COLUMBIA, Tenn. – A woman was killed after a head-on collision in Maury County on Monday afternoon.
The crash happened Monday around 3 p.m. on Nashville Highway/Highway 31 near Imperial Drive on the north side of Columbia.
Officials with the Columbia Police Department said that 49-year old Janine Brammer was driving south when a northbound Honda slammed into her car.
"She was a sweet lady," said Rita Bradley, a neighbor. "She loved animals; she loved her dogs, and she always came across and fed the horses and talked to them."
Investigators said 22-year-old Victoria Shepherd, who was driving northbound, told police she felt her cell phone vibrate in her lap, looked down, and knocked it down into the passenger seat. When she looked up, she said she saw a vehicle stopped in her lane with no brake lights.
Shepherd told police she attempted to miss the vehicle, swerved her vehicle to the left, and went over the median. That's when she struck Brammer's car in the southbound lanes, causing it to roll over on its left side. Brammer died at the scene.
Shepherd was issued a traffic citation for failure to exercise due care. She could face additional charges, pending the completion of the investigation.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
