MTSU Student In Wheelchair Dies After Being Struck By Dump Truck
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A Middle Tennessee State University student in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a dump truck on a busy roadway in Murfreesboro, just blocks from campus.
Officials with the Murfreesboro Police Department said the crash happened just before 9 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and Greenland Drive.
Investigators said 28-year-old David Chitwood was crossing Greenland Drive in his wheelchair when the dump truck hit him. The mass communications major was only one block away from his class.
The victim was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center by Rutherford County EMS, and later died.
The Fatal Accident Crash Scene spent much of the morning piecing together what happened.
Witnesses area said the intersection did not seem safe, even before the incident.
"I used to ride my bike, and I refuse to ride my bike anymore because of this intersection," said MTSU student Caitlin Sadler.
"Obviously it's a tragedy anytime we lose a member of the university family," said MTSU spokesperson Jimmy Hart. "Certainly our thoughts and prayers are with the Chitwood family."
Free counceling services were expected to be available for Chitwood's friends and classmates at MTSU, or anyone who witnessed what happened.
Information about the driver of the dump truck was not available. It was unknown if any charges would be filed.
