Blaze Damages 1,800 Grave Markers In Chattanooga

CREATED Jan 22, 2014

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A fire at the Chattanooga National Cemetery has damaged 1,800 tombstones.

Cemetery director Debra Kendrick told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that some of the tombstones scorched by the 5 acre grass fire on Sunday belonged to veterans of the Civil War.

A fire department spokesman said it wasn't clear what started the blaze.

Kendrick said most of the damage isn't severe, and can be fixed with a pressure washer, though at least three will have to be replaced.

The cemetery, which has more than 43,000 grave markers, is reserved for military veterans with honorable discharges and eligible family members.
