Milwaukee-based speedskater Trevor Masicano won silver at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Jilleanne Rookard just missed a medal.
The two are a couple. Jill worked at a roller rink when she and Trevor trained at the Pettit Center four years ago.
After moving to Utah and back, they were in need of a temporary place to stay. That's when a quiet suburban neighborhood beckoned.
The two occupy a cozy space in the home of Pettit employee Rob Rember and his wife Karen, who opened their door and their hearts when they heard skaters were looking for housing.
"They're awesome. They're a lot of fun," says Karen. "We're really having a good time with them."
"Well Karen cooks a lot, so we raid her refrigerator," says Jill. "The neighbor always brings tomatoes."
Trevor and Jill are just like other couples, until you see some of their workout equipment like a muscle compressor, pipes and foam rollers. The two can spend up to 45 minutes per day sharpening their skates.
You won't find junk food in this apartment. Trevor and Jill use protein powder and make juice smoothies. Trevor was featured with other speedskaters in this month's Men's Journal magazine and the two keep a tally of all their training details.
"I have every day since May logged," says Jill.
Both have a real chance to medal, which would thrill the Rember family.
"I think it would be very cool," Karen says. "I'm going through their scores for the races and it's always like a 12-hour time difference so I'm up in the middle of the night looking to see where they're at."
Trevor and Jill reside far from home. He from New York and she from Michigan, but they've fallen in love with Milwaukee and the warmth of a host family.
"When you're around skaters all the time you get crazy," laughs Jill. "It's really refreshing. Instead of making friends, we're making families."
If they perform well in Russia, this house - filled with food and laughter - will be a part of the reason.
