McCarthy calls new Packers backup Tolzien 'an excellent fit'

CREATED Aug. 31, 2013 - UPDATED: Sep. 2, 2013

A former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback is coming back to his old state to play quarterback for the Green Bay Packers - at least in some fashion.

The Packers added Scott Tolzien (pictured above during the 2010 Rose Bowl festivities) for the purpose of the practice squad.

"Scott, he's an excellent fit for us.  His preseason tape from this year, last year was impressive...particularly this year," said Mike McCarthy on Monday.

"The coaching staff trusted the personnel department.  We had a lot of conversation about the quarterback group.  We're fortunate Scott's here."

Tolzien spent 2012 with the San Francisco 49ers, the first opponent the Packers will play in the 2013 season.

Both he and Seneca Wallace (signed Monday) have an additional knowledge base of the 49ers which the Packers could possibly take advantage of.

"Scott and Seneca are more focused on getting ready for the game, but they definitely can give you insight," said McCarthy.

Tolzien was the starter with the Wisconsin Badgers in 2009 and 10, the latter year being their first of three consecutive Big Ten championship teams.
