GREEN BAY - The head coach of the Green Bay Packers is giving praise to the work Aaron Rodgers has done this offseason, and for how he's leading younger players as training camp begins.

"I think Aaron's off to a great start coming off his off-season," said Packers coach Mike McCarthy during a Friday morning news conference which followed the first practice of the 2013 preseason.

"Aaron had clearly one of his best offseasons.  Our quarterback school...the productivity, the amount of things we were able to accomplish.  He's in good shape.  He's ready to go.  He really understands his role as the leader."

McCarthy also lauded how Rodgers is taking backup quarterbacks under his wing.

"It's important for the veteran in the room to pass the knowldge to the younger guys.  Aaron does that very well.  He's very open with suggestions, comments, constant conversation with Graham (Harrell) and B.J. (Coleman).  He's a very helpful veteran."
