McCarren discusses what it takes for Capers to keep his job

By Jay Sorgi. CREATED Dec 5, 2013

The discussion has run rampant among Packers Planet about the future of defensive coordinator Dom Capers, and whether he could be fired at the end of the season.

"I think that's certainly a possibility," said 620WTMJ/NBC26 Packers analyst and reporter Larry McCarren.

"I don't think mid-season or 3/4 season changes do any good, but I think when they look at the total piece of work in the defense, if they don't recapture some of what they had, some of their success, some of the style of play they had earlier this season, I think it might be a possibility."

Capers has a history of success in Green Bay (NFL's 5th ranked defense in the Super Bowl XLV championship season), but not in more recent times with the loss of players like Nick Collins, Cullen Jenkins and Charles Woodson (worst defense in 2011, 24th of 32 teams this year with an average of 29.4 points given up per game in their current 5-game winless streak).

"I think he knows what he's doing, but the proof of the pudding is always 'how are the guys playing?' " said McCarren.

"If somehow they've lost touch with the players as far as reaching them, getting things corrected, and if you've lost it, you've lost it.  I've been impressed with Dom from the get go, but the guys have got to go."
