Controversial, confusing ending leads to Arizona State win over Wisconsin, 32-30

An offensive showcase in Tempe, Ariz. was about to become a scintillating ending for the Wisconsin Badgers as they were driving for a game-winning field goal to beat Arizona State.

Then, play-calling decisions, a missed penalty and referee mismanagement led to Arizona State coming out with a 32-30 win.

The Badgers were in range of a game-winning field goal when they tried one more offensive play instead of having enough time for two possible field-goal setups in case of a bad snap.

Instead, after a few seconds of holding the football, Joel Stave threw the ball downward, essentially spiking the ball and giving up the play with four seconds left, but the clock to continued to run.

Apparently, he took a knee:

The official was over the football but appeared to take a long time to spot the ball while an Arizona State lineman stayed on the ground to try and waste time - normally a penalty, but not called.

By the time the ball was set for a new play, the clock had run out.

All that happened after a scintillating football game with Melvin Gordon rushing for 193 yards and two touchdowns, but Arizona State gaining 352 yards through the air.
