Twenty-three people attending the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, were injured early Thursday morning and two more were killed when a suspected drunk driver plowed into a crowd outside a nightclub while reportedly trying to flee from police attempting to make a DUI stop. Five of those injured are in critical condition.
The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. After driving into the crowd at high-speed, the driver of the Toyota sedan reportedly kept going, striking and killing a man and woman on a moped. The driver then struck a taxi before crashing, then exiting his car and trying to flee on foot before he was subdued by a pursuing officer’s stun gun.
According to The Hollywood Reporter
, “The man, whose name was not released, faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
“The incident happened at Red River St & 10th St near two venues: Cheer Up Charlies and Mowhawk,” adds The Hollywood Reporter. “Performers listed on the venue websites included a House of Vans Presents show at Mohawk with Odd Future's Tyler the Creator, X, the Black Angels and Cities Aviv; at Cheer Up Charlie Yum, Hereticks and Hola Beach were to perform.”
