Wisconsin DOT Places 60 Bridges in Danger Categories

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Transportation officials have placed about 60 Wisconsin bridges in danger categories that indicate they're vulnerable to collapse and are deteriorating.

An Associated Press review of the latest national bridge records found thousands of bridges across the country have been classified "fracture critical" and "structurally deficient."

The AP review identified some 60 bridges in Wisconsin that fell into both categories. State Department of Transportation officials say all but 27 have been repaired or replaced, are slated for repairs by 2017 or have closed.

DOT Structures Bureau Director Scot Becker says there isn't enough money to go around for repairs. But he downplayed the classifications, saying if the DOT determines a bridge is unsafe the agency places weight limits on it or closes it.
