APPLETON, Wis.- Power outages are causing problems for parents trying to beat today's deadline to apply for the private school voucher program. Schools in the Fox Valley are making adjustments so parents can register on time.
The deadline to apply for private school vouchers is tonight at 4:00 and Xavier Catholic School officials say with the storm this week it's been a struggle just to help families meet that cutoff.
Making phone calls all day, every day, that's what these ladies have been doing inside St. Joseph Parish in Appleton, trying to get people registered for private school vouchers.
"We've been trying to find cellphone numbers, we've been using the media to alert families that we've moved, we've been using facebook and social media," said Director of Admission for the Xavier Catholic School System, Tara Pearce.
Tuesday night's storms ripped through Appleton, knocking out power to Xavier Middle School, the central office where families were originally supposed to meet to apply, forcing staff to improvise.
"We were actually set up on a table in front of the St. Francis Xavier Middle School building," said Deacon Tony Abts.
Relocating to St. Joseph Parish in Appleton allowed for a make shift office, but a huge part of the success is attributed to getting the work out quickly.
"There isn't really the luxury of being able to say well we'll just back everything up a week, can't really do that, school is starting," said Abts.
Despite storm cleanup and power outages all week long Xavier school officials say nearly everybody who's applied for a voucher has been verified.
