Snowmobiler Rescued on Lake Winnebago

CREATED Dec. 15, 2013

CALUMET COUNTY -- Authorities in Calumet County rescued an injured snowmobiler on Lake Winnebago Sunday afternoon.

This happened near Stockbridge, on the east side of the lake, just after 2:00 p.m.

Deputies say a 33 year-old man from Fond du Lac hit an ice shove, and was hurt. He was traveling on the lake with his brother in front of him on another snowmobile.

Rescue crews had a difficult time finding the injured man because blowing snow created white-out conditions.

Eventually a DNR plane located the man, and ground crews rescued him just after 4:00 p.m. He is being treated for hypothermia.

Alcohol was not a factor.

Deputies say although there is ice on the lake, it’s still very dangerous because of open water areas.
