School Voucher Concerns

By Raquel Lamal. CREATED Aug 21, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis.- Some parents are playing the waiting game tonight when it comes to school vouchers.  The lottery to decide which students get in and which ones don't is this week, but some schools are already in session meaning school is starting without them.

No news is not good news for schools in the new voucher program.

"We've been waiting every single day, waiting for information and news," said director of admissions at Notre Dame Academy, Karen Konop.

Notre Dame Academy has already started school for the year, which means any voucher students who get in now will come in at least a week behind the rest.

"We're very prepared with our faculty and staff, we know that they're coming, we're going to be very flexible and we'll help them the best we can to get them situated in school," said Konop.

The Department of Public Instruction is handling the lottery drawing of students into the voucher program and it could take time.

"We have to notify the parents and then they have five days to accept or decline that voucher,"said Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction spokesperson, Patrick Gasper.

The problems come with the process.  If a voucher is turned down the next student on the list has another five days to accept or decline.  This delay in starting school has some parents calling with questions, but schools only have one answer.

"We don't have any other information other than to watch their own computers," said president of GRACE catholic schools, Dane Radecki.

Watch and wait, that's all that can be done right now as parents and schools are on hold to find out who's in and who's out of this year's voucher program.
