Preble High School students school days extended after fire

By Deandra Corinthios. CREATED Aug 19, 2014

GREEN BAY, WI --The Green Bay School District releases its plan on how to make-up lost class time after a fire damaged Preble High School. Classes will start nine days late, on September 15th, and the school day has been extended to compensate.

When students come back, their day will be about 18 minutes longer than a typical school day, but this avoids extending the school year.

Cleaning crews at Preble still hard at work. Half the rooms are ready.

"Now we can start concentrating on major damage areas, closer to the field house," said J. Murphy, with Paul Davis National, the contractor.

And school leaders can breathe a sigh of relief. The task of creating an entirely new school year calendar just for Preble, is accomplished.

"We're excited to get back to school. It has been a journey for us. A long journey," said principal Natasha Rowell.

Students should report for class at Preble on September 15 at 7:30 am. The start time hasn't changed. But two minutes are being added to each class period, extending the day to 3:18 pm instead of 3 pm.

The new schedule doesn't cut into winter or spring break, finals are still on track to begin June 8th, and graduation set for June 10.

"The new schedule needed to avoid using weekends and holidays to make up time," said Mark Smith, the assistant superintendent for continuous school improvement.

District leaders have built in two snow days as well.

But after school activities and sports practices will be a little delayed because of the longer day.

"Within probably 5 to 10 minutes after the students are released," said Smith.

To make the schedule work, four early release days and one recess day will now be full school days.

Preble students who take classes at other high schools should still report for those classes on their normally scheduled days, the week of September 2nd.
