TOWN OF MENASHA, Wis. -- A Town of Menasha man is behind bars after police are called to a home in the 1200 block of Cold Spring Road for a child who fell down the stairs and suffered a seizure.
Two detectives in the Town of Menasha are assigned to this case. They're looking into whether what happened was an accident, or abuse.
Robert Gayhead watched the ambulance drive by his house on Cold Spring Road on Wednesday morning. Inside, a three-year-old girl was seriously injured. Gayhead had no idea the victim was a little girl.
"It saddens you that things like this have to happen," he said.
The person who called 911 said the three-year-old child had fallen down the stairs and suffered a seizure. But emergency responders called police.
"Something didn't strike them as right, and due to the severity of the injuries they contacted law enforcement," said Officer Jason Weber with the Town of Menasha Police Department.
The child had to be flown to a hospital in Milwaukee.
A 26-year-old Town of Menasha man is in the Winnebago County Jail on a probationary hold.
If police find this is a case of abuse, the charges could vary depending on the severity of the injuries.
"Worst case scenario it could be a homicide by physical abuse of a child. Or it could just be a reckless injury or a battery," said Officer Weber.
Gayhead and other neighbors are keeping the child in their thoughts.
"Hope that she recovers," said Gayhead.
There is no word on the little girl's condition. No formal charges have been filed against the man in custody.
