STURGEON BAY, Wis. -- Police in Sturgeon Bay say they arrested 33 year-old Benjamin LaLonde, of Green Bay, after discovering what investigators call a meth lab inside a local hotel.
According to police, a cleaning crew at the Best Western Hotel on the city's east side found chemicals and drug paraphernalia consistent with the manufacturing of methamphetamine.
“They knew what they had wasn't normal and they kept their wits and backed out and called us,” said Capt. Dan Brinkman, of the Sturgeon Bay Police Dept.
Police evacuated a section of the hotel to remove the items and secure the hazardous materials. A team from Chicago is due at the site on Friday to dispose of the waste.
“The hotel is safe to enter; they don't have anything to worry about. Everything is taken out of the room and building,” said Brinkman.
LaLonde is being held in the Door County Jail. He made an appearance in the Door County Circuit Court on Friday. The judge set bond at $3,500. He is due back in court for an initial appearance on Feb. 17.
