Health insurance sign-up deadline looming

By Deandra Corinthios. CREATED Mar 21, 2014

APPLETON, WI --If you haven't signed up for health insurance on the new federal exchange, you only have ten days left or you'll have to pay a fine. Here in Northeast Wisconsin, there has been a surge in applications, as counselors work hard to make sure no one goes without coverage.

These days every day is a busy one at Partnership Community Health, with just 10 days left to enroll. Application counselors are booked up with appointments and taking walk-ins.

Virginia Frank of Neenah is intimidated by the application process.

"Makes it a lot less complicated having someone here to help you," said Frank.

For those who enroll before the March 31st deadline, coverage will begin on May 1st.

If you don't buy insurance, you'll pay the penalty. Ninety-five dollars per adult or, one percent of your yearly income; whichever number is higher. Plus, all your health care expenses.

"People are not too late to come in. There's still plenty of time. We don't want to make people feel like they are rushed or they'll be judged to come in because they were late," said Certified Application Counselor, Brittany Teresinski,

For some, it's all about preventing the unthinkable: cancer, a surgery, or an accident.

" To have peace of mind, so I don't have to worry about a 150 thousand dollar medical bill," said Frank.
