GREEN BAY - The popularity of deep-fried turkeys on Thanksgiving has ignited an increase in cooking fires and burns in recent years.
Experts say it's important to never use a turkey fryer inside a home, on a porch, or in a garage. It's also important not to overfill the oil or leave the fryer unattended.
"The easiest way to prevent fire on Thanksgiving is quite simply to stay in the kitchen, or stay by whatever cooking appliance you're using. Most fires happen when your attention stops," said Lieutenant Nick Craig with the Green Bay Fire Department.
You're also reminded to make sure your home has working smoke detectors and to replace the batteries at least once a year.
