The Brewers tweeted this news Friday morning.
Axford had 106 saves with a 3.35 ERA for Milwaukee.
He was known in Milwaukee for his changing facial hair, warmth with reporters and saving games during the team's 2011 playoff run.
He apparently didn't have to leave Pittsburgh when the Brewers left after winning their series over the Pirates.
