MANITOWOC-- A high school boys soccer game at Algoma High School was called-off after fans threatened a member of the opposing team.
The WIAA says it's not clear exactly what was said from those fans to the players from Manitowoc’s Roncalli High School, but it was enough for the referee to call off the game, and send teams home.
“You're taking those opportunities away from students athletes that have worked hard,” said Todd Clark, Spokesperson for the WIAA. “This is education athletics. It isn't for entertainment, there's learning things that occur here.”
Clark says now it is up to the schools to work it out, and file a report to the organization.
“Come up with a plan so things like this don't happen in the future,” he said.
Algoma High School sent out an apology today to Roncalli.
"We do not support this behavior and have addressed that fact with the individuals responsible,” said Nick Cochart, the Principal and Athletic Director.
He goes on to say the Algoma community prides itself on sportsmanship.
“We have addressed this situation and will return to the highest standards of sportsmanship with all members of our Algoma sports community,” he said.
It's unclear if the game will stick with the 1-1 tie it was left in. The WIAA says if this was a tournament contest they would have been more involved in determining a winner for the match.
LETTER FROM ALGOMA HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL/ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
To Whom it may Concern,
lt is with regret that the actions of a few individuals, none of which are current students or athletes have cast a shadow on our high school soccer program and the Algoma community as a whole. We do not support this behavior and have addressed that fact with the individuals responsible. In respect to the Manitowoc Roncalli community, parents, and students we would like to acknowledge this unfortunate display of unsportsmanlike conduct and apologize for this behavior. Our community prides itself on positive sportsmanship and interaction with our opponents in all activities we participate in. It should he noted that this same community was awarded the WIAA excellence in sportsmanship honor during the state softball tournament this past spring. We have addressed this situation and will return to the highest standards of sportsmanship with all members of our Algoma sports community.
