APPLETON - After more than 40 years and thousands of miles, an Appleton man has been reunited with his beloved guitar.
In 1964, Gary Arndt picked up a 12-string Gibson guitar.
"I cashed in some savings bonds and went down to Hyde Music in Appleton and purchased it," he said.
When he enlisted in the military, he took the guitar with him, and when he was sent to Sicily, he was sure to bring it along. In his free time, he played music with other soldiers. Eventually, he sold the guitar to a fellow band mate.
"I regretted it immediately," he said. "But it was gone."
A few weeks ago, Gary was searching the internet for a similar guitar and purchased one from a shop in Cincinnati. But it's what happened when it arrived that's truly remarkable.
"I looked inside right away, and there were my initials," he said. "It feels like winning the lottery."
Gary shared his excitement with a former band mate, who says it's the best story he's heard in a very long time. He says he has no idea how the guitar made it back to the United States, but says he plans on enjoying it for years to come.
