GREEN BAY, Wis.- The Red Cross is always asking for blood, but one many takes that to heart. Bill Waerzeggers is donating his 100th gallon of blood today, something not many people have done. He says it's just the right thing to do.
Waerzeggers holds the record for donating the most blood of anyone in the upper Midwest. He also gives platelets to the Red Cross and even with today's milestone donation, Waerzeggers says he won't stop at 100 gallons.
For the past 43 years Waerzeggers has been donating to the Red Cross.
"I started right out of high school, it was just an opportunity to do something maybe a little bit different and maybe donate more often," said Waerzeggers.
He's donated 100 gallons of blood and platelets as of today and has helped countless people in need.
"Thousand of lives have been impacted by Bill and it's amazing when you try to put it into perspective and how much time he's spent with us," said Bobbi Snethen, a spokesperson for the Red Cross.
Each time he comes in to donate he's in a chair for hours at a time.
"It's a commitment of time, I'm here for roughly 3 hours," said Waerzeggers.
It's time he's willing to give though and nothing gets in his way of donating.
"I do burn up a few vacation days coming here," replied Waerzeggers on taking time off work to donate.
Today his whole family came up from the Milwaukee area to support him for having given so much to others. It means a lot to his daughter Maria.
"Growing up he never missed anything of ours so I wanted to make sure that this is like the one chance we have to kind of celebrate something for him," said Maria Waerzeggers.
Despite all the attention today, Bill remains modest about his donations.
"There's other people here doing the same thing I'm doing today, I've just done it more than they have," said Waerzeggers on donating 100 gallons today.
Bill Waerzeggers says he hopes he can be an example for others to donate as well. His wife said after his donation the whole family is going out to dinner to celebrate this milestone.
