ASHWAUBENON -- It's an outdoorsman's dream shopping location. A brand new Cabela's store is opening on Lombardi Avenue just off of Highway 41.
Just down the road from Lambeau Field, the project is part of an on-going effort to develop the stadium district. NBC26 got to take a sneak peek inside today, just ahead of the grand opening.
The opening of the store has special meaning for Wayne Schumacher. His award winning buck will be featured in the store's Wisconsin Hall of Fame. "At one point, I can bring my family here and they can see it," he says.
And that's not all they'll see in the 100,000 square foot store. There's a replica mountain range, an aquarium, and just about anything an outdoorsman could ask for. "All the fun that we're selling and this is where these folks are working and you can just feel the excitement. It's in the air," says marketing manager Jorge Suarez.
More than 300 jobs were created in the year-long construction project. Suarez says he sees all the people involved as a team. "You get the butterflies before the big game, that's what this feels like. Every day you get closer. Our championship game is on July 25th."
With the addition of the Cabela's superstore, the stadium district grows even farther down Lombardi Ave., which is good for local businesses and, of course, the Packers. Lambeau Field is a tourist destination that brings business to the area, but Aaron Popkey says the Packers support projects like this to further develop the district. "People want to visit because of Cabela's and that's going to help the area overall and that's something that I think everyone involved in this community is excited about," says Popkey, Director of Public Affairs for the Packers.
Wayne Schumacher is especially excited. For him, Cabela's will be a sort of museum, storing one of his finest accomplishments for all to see.
