GREEN BAY - The 4th of July remains one of the most dangerous times of the year for both home fires and injuries.
Fireworks account for half of all fires reported during the holiday, and Green Bay firefighters say they're handing out more fines this year. Doctors say a growing number of children under the age of five are being injured by the explosives.
"More burns, more superficial burns," said Dr. Michael DeFrank with St. Vincent Hospital. "Occasionally, we see something worse from something more explosive."
The fire department can fine people for any firework that explodes or take flight. In Green Bay, they're citing more people each year. Last year, the department wrote more than 80 citations within city limits.
Police officers are also handing out citations, starting at $300.
