DE PERE, Wis. -- Having to visit a food pantry after losing a job would dampen anyone's spirits, but not David Demmith "I'm not ashamed of it the church is here to help and that's part of what a church is," Demmith told us.
It all happens at St. Mark Lutheran Church in De Pere. A small storage room has been transformed into a grocery store for those battling difficult times. "That's why we're here just to care for people to reach out to help them," Lydia Parlow, Pantry Director explained. "Some people just come one time and some people come more on a regular basis."
Using a checklist filled with everything from food to toiletries, St Mark lets people shop and figure out what items best fit their family needs. Each month the pantry averages about 200 people.
Sponsoring St. Mark Lutheran Church for the three degree Guarantee raises awareness in the community of the pantry needs. "Because we're a small pantry," Parlow explained. "We just haven't gotten the word out".
No matter what time of year it is St. Mark is always looking for support. "The need is always there it's never really ending. That's part of the challenge of running a pantry," Parlow said.
For Demmith it's a service he relies on, "Don't be afraid to ask your local church for help."
