MARINETTE- One of Northeast Wisconsin's largest employers announced today it's hiring to fill an expansion. During a ribbon cutting ceremony today Marinette Marine announced its growing its partnership with Lockheed Martin, meaning they have jobs to fill and they're looking for local people to fill them.
This expansion spreads the shipyard offices further into downtown and the company is looking to hire almost 50 new employees.
The day started with a ribbon cutting to unveil the new Lockheed Martin building. A company partnering with Marinette Marine to test military combat ships.
"It's going to allow folks to become much better at what they're doing because the work moves to them and they stay in one place," said Joe North, the vice president for Litoral Ship Systems.
Lockheed Martin helps with the analyzing of the ships, particularly during the testing process. Before moving to downtown Marinette the ship yard had to send the results out, but now it's all local.
"There's a lot of competition out there for shipbuilding resources, so it's our job to make sure we stay on track and get these ships delivered on time and we get them delivered on cost," said Chuck Goddard, the president and CEO of Marinette Marine.
They have their work cut out for them. Four military combat ships are under construction and they're expecting four more in the coming years.
"We now have four more options left on the contract so we're expecting two more in 2014 and two more in 2015," said North.
With these two big companies, both Lockheed Martin and Marinette Marine being in the same city leaders say the testing of these big ships is about to get a lot more productive.
