GREEN BAY – It’s a big day for local organizations that support cancer patients and their families.
They're receiving donations money, raised by the Jerry Parins “Cruise for Cancer”, and this year, they raised $99,000.
“Cancer is such a devastating thing,” said Jerry Parins, “Cruise for Cancer” organizer. “It just tears families right down to nothing.”
In 2003, Parins, the Packers’ former Director of Security, was diagnosed with cancer. His wife has also battled lung cancer.
“It's amazing the things that he [Parins] does,” said Mark Murphy, Packers President and CEO.
Every year, Parins organizes the ride that helps so many people.
“It's the nickels and dimes that really make this thing go, trust me,” he said.
This year, the groups include Angel Classic Inc., Bellin Health Foundation Inc., St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital and Unity Limited Partnership.
“Through providing these little areas of comfort, we can provide hope and provide a light at the end of the tunnel,” said Sue Watts, the Chief Development Officer with St. Vincent Hospital.
The organizations provide things like gas cards and massages for cancer patients, whatever they can do to make the fight easier.
“They've got to stay strong, and it's the little things to keep that strength,” said Parins.
Since "Cruise for Cancer" began ten years ago, the group has raised nearly $700,000.
