Early Morning Airport Security Crunch
ASHWAUBENON -- More flight options, and larger planes, have resulted in more passengers leaving out of Austin Straubel International Airport; especially during the early morning hours.
That’s why passengers are being asked to check in a minimum of 1 hour and 15 minutes prior to departure on domestic flights and 2 hours before, if traveling on international flights. “Most of us have become accustomed to coming to Austin Straubel 45 minutes before a flight and not having a problem,” said Airport Director Tom Miller. “But, with more people flying out of Austin Straubel, especially with Delta Air Lines now utilizing Airbus aircraft on several flights, along with the addition of nonstop service to Atlanta each morning, there have been longer lines at the Concourse B security checkpoint. We don’t want anyone missing their flight.” United and American Airlines utilize a separate concourse and their operations do not appear to be impacted at this time.
Delta passengers can check-in at the ticket counter as early as 4:00a.m. The TSA Security Checkpoint opens at 4:30a.m. An example of the increase in travelers: Next week nearly 1,300 passengers will head for Delta gates, in Concourse B, to catch flights which leave before 7:15a.m. That’s an increase of 81% over the same time period last year. “It’s great that so many people are choosing to fly local; we truly appreciate it,” added Miller. “We just want to make sure everyone gets checked in and through security in time to catch their flights. “
