DE PERE, WI- DOT leaders say it's one of the worst intersections in the state.
Highway 32-57 and County Road X The De Pere intersection ranks in the top five when it comes to accidents. And now the DOT says it's time for a change.
The DOT says they will make changes to the intersection after people have voiced their concerns. After talking with some drivers it seems changes are needed sooner rather than later.
At all times, drivers should "obey the speed limit."
But one particular area south of De Pere, "this is the intersection of highway 32/57 and County rd X."
Has grown a reputation for high speed crashes. Rated one of the worst crossings in the state. Busy with heavy truck traffic.
"There are potential hotspots," says Nate Hibl.
"Right angle type crash. People trying to make a left turn or cross 32/57 from the side roads," says Andy Fulcer of the Wisconsin DOT.
Drivers like Nate Hibl who works right near the intersection know about the dangers and even witnessed fender benders.
"There are blindspots that are available and definitely can catch you by surprise," says Hibl.
The DOT says the biggest issue with the intersection is people not coming to a complete stop or paying attention to the speed limit. Now their solution to the problem doing what they've done with so many other intersections. Build a roundabout.
"The roundabout reduces the speeds of vehicles approaching the intersection," says Fulcer.
Drivers at a public meeting agree and want a plan put in place before more fatalities are reported at the intersection.
"Streamline the traffic through make it safer," says Hibl.
But until changes take place, DOT employees encourage drivers to play it safe.
The DOT says roadway construction on the intersection is tenatively scheduled for Fall of 2015 or Spring of 2016. They encourage the public to provide more input on the intersection.
