ROSENDALE, Wis. (AP) -- Investigators have determined that a Rosendale man who doused his home with gasoline and set it on fire wasn't trying to hurt anyone but himself.
A Reporter of Fond du Lac report says 54-year-old Joseph Shafer was found dead in his home Friday. Responding officers found the house filled with smoke and reeking of gasoline, and empty gas cans sat outside.
Police set up a perimeter and armed officers guarded firefighters who tried to fight the blaze. But efforts were scaled back following the discovery of a fuse leading from the home to a cache of fireworks in the garage.
Officials initially weren't sure if Shafer had set up the fireworks with the intention of harming others. But investigators have concluded that wasn't the case.
