Teacher Bullying Allegations
APPLETON--15- year-old Benji Backer says he has been called “weird” “stupid” and “dumb” by those who don’t see eye to eye with him politically. The Appleton North freshman claims it's his teachers, not his peers who are doing the name calling. So he is speaking out.
"A lot of students don't like dealing with teacher who is harassing, bullying, indoctrinating students and they are too scared to stand up and say anything and so my goal is to get this awareness all across the country let school districts know that this happens,” Backer said.
The Appleton School District is aware of Backer's claims. District leaders are investigating.
"We just want all of our students to feel comfortable and respected and safe when they are in their classes, so it concerns us when any student comes forward with a concern,” said Ben Vogel, Assistant Superintendent for the Appleton School District.
District administrators admit the state's political climate could have played a role in the alleged incident. They are using the current investigation as a tool to help prevent things like this from happening again.
"It’s been an interesting couple of years here in Wisconsin we all have our views, but we have to keep those views out of the classroom,” Vogel said.
Backer says he is fine with whatever decision the district makes regarding his bullying claims.
