GREEN BAY-- A Neenah Republican has an alternative to the controversial voucher expansion program touted by Gov. Scott Walker and met with opposition from both parties.
Rep. Dean Kaufert (R) is introducing a bill that would allow a tax break for people who enroll their children in private school.
Rep. Kaufert says the idea has been considered before, but now is the right time to get the bill passed. Unlike thew voucher program, which is limited to families in certain school districts, this tax cut would be implemented statewide.
Opponents say it takes money away form public schools and will cost the state millions in revenue.
A new bill would allow families who send their children to private schools to receive a tax break of up to $1500 for high school students. The tax break would be small at first and would reach its peak in 10 years.
