OCONTO-- An Oconto Falls man accused of shooting a 19 year old acquaintance in 1998 made his initial court appearance on the first degree homicide charge.
Peter Hanson has been charged with murder for allegedly shooting Chad McLean and dumping his body in the Pensaukee River. Police say Hanson, McLean and another man were drinking in a shed on Hanson's property in Abrams when the alleged crime happened.
McLean's friends and family packed the courtroom Thursday to get a glimpse of the man accused of killing him. Bond was set at $500,000 on the murder charge. Hanson has been in the Oconto County Jail since November on unrelated drug and child pornography charges. A trial for those charges is set for May.
The case went unsolved for 15 years, until the "John Doe" investigation was concluded, resulting in Hanson being charged with murder. Police say they got a break in the case in 2009 after interviewing the suspect's wife. In 2011 additional interviews of family members and witnesses prompted a full investigation.
Hanson also faces unrelated-related drug and child pornography charges. A trial for those charges is set for May.
Hanson will appear in court April 24 for a preliminary hearing on the murder charge.
