GREEN BAY -- Goodwill's Harmony Cafe in Green Bay is hosting the Sandy Hook Elementary School Benefit and Community Awareness Event to raise funds for the victims' families, survivors, and first responders from the Dec. 14 tragedy in Newtown, CT.
The event will take place from 1 until 5 pm this Saturday at 1660 W. Mason St. in Green Bay. It will feature live entertainment by local musicians, guest speakers, a silent auction, and a Healing Arts and Community Awareness room to help everyone come together and reflect on how to keep our local communities safe. The event is free and open to the public, but anyone in attendance is encouraged to either purchase a silent auction item or make a monetary donation to the Newtown Memorial Fund.
The local fundraiser is being spearheaded by John Mazzariello, a local musician who frequently plays at the Harmony Cafe. He's originally from Newtown, CT and went to school at Sandy Hook. His mom is a retired Sandy Hook teacher who came out of retirement to help students and staff make the transition to their new school building. Mazzariello's parents and sister will be flying in for Saturday's event.
"I think it's important to show a community like this that we're all in this together and that we will support each other no matter how many miles are between," Mazzariello said.
