BRILLION- A major iron foundry in northeast wisconsin will be laying off workers. Brillion iron works will be laying off 46 people starting next monday.
This is the second time in the last year, the company has had a major lay-off.
Mining and construction markets have softened this first quarter. As a result, companies brillion works with have lowered their production.
However after talking with people in the town, today's lay-off didn't come as a surprise.
When Brad Schultz walks right outside his door, he gets a good view of Brillion Iron Works. A company that has been there.
"As long as I can remember," says Schultz.
And a stable foundation for the brillion community.
"A lot of people from Brillion work there. It keeps us going," says Schultz
Brad Grant of Brillion has lived in the small town for around 10 years. He says the iron works not only provides people with a job but it is also.
"A very good paying job employer as well so, good for the community," says Grant.
The company released a statement saying quote "When demand in the global construction and mining markets comes back up this year, which we expect it to do, then we will re-staff at brillion in response."
Grant is confident the company will re-hire everyone. "Over the ten years that I've been in town, I've seen it go up and down where they've layed off quite a few people and then have always called them back," says Grant
"I sure hope that they start getting more work and everything because like i said, a lot of people depend that place," says Schultz
A place that drives the local economy. The lay-off leaves the company with 385 production and 60 salaried workers. Brillion Iron Works previously had a lay-off back in August.
