GREEN BAY, WI --Christians around the world and here in northeast Wisconsin are celebrating Palm Sunday which marks the start of the Holy Week.
Worshipers gathered at St. Francis Xavier Cathedra in Green Bay for a service.
Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem before his crucifixion. According to Christian tradition he was greeted by cheering crowds waving palm branches.
For worshippers it's a meaningful day.
"It is the celebration of Chirst the king, he is truth, beauty, love, and this is the start of Holy Week. This is the start of why we are safe," said Mary Ann Kohlmann, attending the service.
Palms blessed in the ceremony are burned at the end of the day, and the ashes are preserved for next year's Ash Wednesday.
In places where palms can't be obtained, branches of yew, willow, and sallow trees are often used.
