GREEN BAY, WI-- Lane closures and big backups on Highway 41 this weekend as crews run into an unexpected obstacle during their construction project.
The northbound lanes on Highway 41 are closed between Shawano Avenue and Velp avenue through the weekend. Southbound 41 is also restricted to one lane for Saturday night.
This is because contruction crews' drill got stuck in thick mud.
Crews were using a pipe hammer to trying to jack underneath the highway but it seized up. They originally thought there was an object blocking it but Saturday morning found out it was the type of soil that caused a choke hold around the pipe.
"It's a lot like when you step in wet clay and your boot gets stuck and you have to pull really hard to get it out those are the kinds of forces that are choking that pipe right now," said Barry Taye with the Wisconsin DOT.
More than 20,000 cars are expected to use 41northnound in one day.
