Green Bay Mayor Has Vision to Consolidate Area Governments

By Jonathon Gregg. CREATED Mar 20, 2013

Green Bay-- Mayor Jim Schmitt has laid out a plan to re-map the city to include surrounding communities and do it by 2025. It would create one zip code, one tax code and one government.

"As time goes on, I believe that would be the ultimate goal. Of course that would take some time to do it and a lot of meetings," said Alderman Jerry Wiezbiskie.

The mayor is calling it "Unify Green Bay," and says by creating one metro government for the area would strengthen the community's influence at the state and federal level. "I mean, Madison is what, 212,000 people. We would be at 183,000. The political clout would be phenomenal and there wouldn't be any political pressure anymore."

It's a plan that has some people skeptical. There is some hesitancy from Alderman David Boyce, "Something that is a little unforeseen by myself and a lot of the other city council but it is something to look into."
